When you think of a wedding in Peculiar, Missouri, you probably don’t expect deer skulls, disco balls, and a bouquet with a bone in it—but Zoe & Dillon’s wedding wasn’t about expectations. It was about embracing their quirks, celebrating their love, and doing things their way. This intimate and peculiar (pun intended) wedding at The Dogwood Gardens was an intentional, joy-filled day that perfectly reflected their unique love story.

A High School (Re)Connection
Zoe and Dillon’s love story began years ago when they crossed paths in high school, though they didn’t truly connect until fate brought them together at a bar years later. Dillon, ever the supportive partner, proposed during Zoe’s birthday celebration, which feels so on-brand for these two—laid-back, personal, and full of love.
Zoe is the kind of person who embraces her oddities and lives boldly different, and Dillon is the perfect counterbalance, supporting her every step of the way. Together, they’ve created a relationship rooted in individuality and mutual respect, which shone through in every detail of their wedding day.
A Spiritual Start to Forever
The day began with a deeply symbolic and spiritual shaman ceremony led by Zoe’s mother. Burning sage around the couple and incorporating a handfasting ritual, she explained the meaning behind each charm that tied their hands together, symbolizing the strengths of their relationship. This wasn’t just about Zoe and Dillon—it was about welcoming Dillon into the family in a way that felt heartfelt and personal.
Halloween Vibes and Quirky Details
Dogwood Gardens provided the perfect outdoor backdrop for their ceremony, held under a massive tree that, fun fact, had a small beehive in its trunk! Guests kept their distance, but the buzzing bees added an almost poetic touch to the day.
Zoe’s bridal look was anything but traditional. She wore a short white dress paired with bright red elbow-length gloves, cowboy boots, and a custom-embroidered veil. The veil was like a scrapbook of her life, featuring elements that meant the world to her—a lemon for her maiden name, a black cat for her pet, and more.
The decor leaned into Halloween-esque vibes with deer skulls, a chartreuse sofa, disco balls, and subtle spooky touches. Their kids, acting as ring bearers, added a sweet family touch to the ceremony.
Breaking the Mold
Zoe and Dillon were intentional in every aspect of their day, focusing on what truly mattered to them: having their people there, embracing their uniqueness, and steering clear of wedding “rules.”
Even during their wedding party photos, we had fun with creative ideas. One of my favorites? Making Zoe and Dillon stand still in the center while the wedding party walked around them, creating a ghostly blur effect that felt as whimsical as the rest of the day.
Why Intentional Weddings Are Everything
Zoe and Dillon’s wedding is proof that the best celebrations are the ones that reflect who you are as a couple. Whether that means hosting a spiritual shaman ceremony, incorporating quirky decor, or dancing in cowboy boots, the key is making your wedding day yours.
